Architecture

SSan Jose doesn't have a predominant architecture style,  you can find a mixture of styles all around the city.

San Jose sits in the middle of a high valley which occupies the center of Costa Rica. When driving into the valley at night either from above, or below one gives the impression that it is one huge metropolitan area but actually it's a number of medium sized cities. Downtown San Jose is crammed with parks, and every park has a featured building on one side of it.

The buildings in San Jose are a mixture of Spanish Colonial style and modern architecture. The Cathedral of San Jose is an avid example of architecture from the Spanish Colonial period. One of the city's most well known buildings is the National Theatre.

Along the 2nd Avenue Boulevard you will find mix of European, American and Latin American influences. Next to the Plaza de la Democracia(Democracy Park) is the National Museum. The building called Bellavista Fort. Is the formerly army headquarters. The museum has interesting exhibits on the Spanish Colonization, the indigenous tribes, banana and coffee production and some spectacular pre-Columbian gold artwork. The costa rican parliament is located next to the museum on the north side.

For architecture, one can also look around Barrio Amon. This is one of the most antique neighborhoods in San Jose. In Barrio Amon you can find beautiful edifications, which were once inhabited by wealthy families in the past.

Nowadays, it is full with offices, cafes, hotels and B&B’s. this has allowed these houses to be kept well maintained, and still show  their original beauty.
