The American Continent as a whole has since its European takeover become truly a melting pot, and these words couldn’t serve finer a purpose than when speaking of its food qualities. Many influences are to be regarded: Native-Costarican, Spanish, and during the late 19th century, with the coming of British, Italian, African and German peoples many new and fascinating trades brought about a much more complex menu to the local table.
Traditionally speaking, the Costarican chart doesn’t actually differ much from the standard central-american palette, however occasionally presenting a plate of its own. Rice, Beans, legumes and corn being about the main traditional backbone of its cooking, red and white meats adding to the combo; fruit truly becoming the finest assortment of all national alimentary produce.
A few dishes instantly stand out to the tourist as local delicacies, Gallo Pinto being the best known of all –Rice and Beans re-fried together with seasonings, plentiful of butter or tasty lubricant of choice joined normally by scrambled eggs, bread and sour cream for breakfast full delight-, Olla de Carne, Tamales (a Christmas Must-have), the infamous Chicharrones and the traditional and always different Arroz con Pollo.
Modern Cuisine has only but recently settled in town for the enjoyment of locals and visitors. The main tendency shown in gourmet and semi such restaurants being that of Fusion Cuisine. Varied international options are available within the San Jose city limits and more open on a monthly basis, ‘Tis truly one the fastest growing markets in San Jose.
It must be said however, if One wishes to really adventure in local foods, the traditional Sodas –as the small food joints are known- are compulsory visit. These can be found in pretty much every other corner around town and the prices can be most decent when compared to the finer and pricier places.
